Not much point in applying for a job if the salary isn't 1 you can live on or a match or better to what your currently on.

Anyone can live on NMW, just many don't know how.

They're not currently employed as they're with the Job Centre, which is why they had to go to the job fair. If they've not been looking long then fair enough to keep looking for something closer to what they want. Otherwise, they should just be going for any job they can do regardless of salary.

As for whether it was right to ask about salary, I'd say if you're asking a few different questions then querying that is alright, but if you went up and asked that straight away and only that I can understand why they may have given you a bit of a look. Salary may be important to you, but you're not at the jobs fair to gather all the salary information on positions, you're there to talk to companies, ask about the actual work, see if they have any jobs etc.
  • I was forced to attend a job fair about 8-9 years ago when I was on JSA. Most of the stands had disinterested corpses sitting behind them that weren't really interested in talking.

I consider them waste of time and would never go to one again unless it was maybe an industry specific job fair.
  • People have a very British attitude, mustn't mention money. Money is the primary reason virtually everyone works, of course a company should be willing to discuss payscales.

I have no issue with candidates asking about salary. It is at the end of the day the main reason why people want a job. There is little point in people going through a recruitment process if the position doesn't pay the amount they are looking for.
