mum always makes fruit salad too, just some random fruit like grapes, apple, orange etc chopped up in a bowl and pour in a bit of Five Alive (she uses the one in the green carton)Wiggly:heartpulsFB0

How long is the party going on for?
TBH, most kids just want to play and wont eat much. They are 4 years old..lol. I would concentrate on decent games to play and stick with basic food like:
Sausage Rolls
Sarnies (cheese/ham or jam)
Cheese straws
Cheese & Pineapple sticks
Fruit sticks
Jelly & Cream
Crisps
Cake
Pop
For the adults, I would do a cheese tray and crackers with grapes etc.
The box of wine is a good idea.
Why are parents coming too?

All of these ideas sound lovely! I am starting to think I had a deprived childhood because I never had anything like these at my parties- it was always paste butties and fairy cakes! I like the sound of the marshmallows with the chocolate on top. I have just found a recipe for hm marshmallows and might try this for DD2's party in a couple of weeks.
What about pigs in blankets? White sliced bread wrapped around cooked cocktail sausages, brushed with melted butter and baked in the oven for a short time until the bread is golden.
Last year at DD2's birthday party I did a hm chocolate fondue - I put a big bowl of melted chocolate on a tray and surrounded it with mini donuts, strawberries, marshmallows, sponge fingers and so on. It was a runaway success but it was very messy! It started off quite sedately but some boisterous boys started messing about and before I knew it loads of kids were covered. I sent the most annoying child (whose Mum was similarly annoying) home with the leftovers which was a bit naughty but.....Jane

Parents have always attended the parties. I know they are all 4 and under but I don't think I could keep an eye on all of them at the same time let alone my own. When my dd is a little older I will only invite the kids and not the parents.

Sorry Pennypincher....the party is for 2 hours. Last year the last person left after 4 hours....it starts at 12:00 and I expect a finish 2 to 2 hrs 30 mins later but one never knows. If the weather is on our side there will be a jumping castle as well. This will be deflated once everyone has finished eating.... : )

Sounds lovely!
To save money, you could:
# buy value cola/orangeade/fizzy water... noone will know the difference
# put value crisps into bowls... noone will need a full bag each
# pad the table out with loads of carrot sticks, cucumber strips, cheese straws (cheap and easy to make) and value dip
#make everything bite sized. Kids that age waste like there is no tomorrow. So chop up the cocktail sausages, cut sarnies into 1/8s, make weeny desserts... you could portion up jelly/icecream in muffin cases - it will be quite enough for the littlies.
Hope you enjoy it!!!0 -
sandy2, how do I make frogs out of the marshmallows
I must admit it's a few years since i did them. You use the round marsh mallows that came in pink and white. One formed the squat body and I used butter cream or chocolate chips for eyes, then used chocolate buttons or slice of marshmallow for the feet for body to squat on...not a very good description I'm afraid.
But I have found this site which might give you some other ideas
http://www.cadburypartypals.com.au/main.asp?PageId=216
this pic came from their site and just involves a packet of green jelly and a packet of chocolate frogs http://www.cadburypartypals.com.au/main.asp?PageId=61&MenuGroupId=2&Section=Food
PS they also had 'Fairy sandwiches'..the ones with hundreds and thousands0 -
Our favorite at parties was "punch" especially with little jelly sweets inside, how about those rings you can get or frogs (so they can kiss them of course!) You can also put sherbert in lemonade which is meant to be lovely but I think its the crystallised stuff not the powder.
Sausage rolls
Primula filled celery (just squeeze along the ridge-my mums favorite!)
Pinwheel sandwiches or ones cut with themed cookie cutters
Bread sticks or cheese straws
Make various dips maybe even a choc sauce for the fruit?
Cold pasta salad-maybe with tuna and sweetcorn or with bacon?
If party bags are being provided a cupcake in each would work well and have a much smaller cake for during the party.0
