Need advice please

Hi sorry if this is in the wrong category...

Basically I need some advice on how to get money seriously fast other than getting loans or credit cards. I was working full time and then in april got glandular fever (thought it was tonsilitus but had blood tests to confirm and was signed off sick from 1st june) my employer was not compassionate about this at all despite letters and certificates from my doctors and the hospital, and mid august my employer got rid of me because i didnt recover quick enough. So as you can imagine I am in quite a predicament, I have no money left and bills to pay, a mortgage payment fast approaching and I have no idea how I am going to get through the new few months.

I am recovered and looking for work however we all know how hard it can be finding a job. I still live at home with my parents, my mum is sick and my dad looks after her so it falls on me to provide the funds for the bills - jobseekers is not enough to cover my bills and I have had such a bad time with the jobcentre before (they are useless in my experience)..

I am sorry for the long post but I wondered if anyone knows if there is some sort of claim you can make if you get fired from your job?? Otherwise I am going to lose the house as I have a mortgage to pay.. I am selling everything I can but I have nothing of value other than my car but obviously i cant sell it because then it reduces my chances of finding work/applying for jobs due to location etc.

Sorry again I am desperate and I cant sell my belongings quick enough or to make enough money to cover my bills. I have no one who can help me financially.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your predicament.

You won't lose your house as soon as you miss a mortgage payment. You should phone your lender, but potentially you should be able to not pay them until you can claim the benefit Support for Mortgage Interest:

I think you need help reviewing your family's benefits. Bills can't just be down to you. For example, your mum may qualify for sickness benefits or your dad may qualify for carer's allowance.

Citizens Advice would help or you can post here where people know rather more than me:

    Hope this helps.

I would talk to Citizen's Advice about your legal rights. It is dependent on so many factors, like your type of contract, how long you'd been working there etc, but you might be able to take your employer to court for firing you over a health related absence. There are laws about that kind of thing.

I don't know how much help will be available as I imagine the mortgage, bills etc are in your parents name(s), not yours?

Short answer, you can't. If there were a way everyone would be doing it.

Have you worked there over 2 years? If so, you may a claim. However, if within the first 2 years then they can basically get rid of you for any reason. You'd do best asking about that on the Employment board on here and/or Citizen's Advice as others have said.

Looking for work, yes the Job Centre is a horrible place to have to go. They're not there to help you get work, they're there to make sure you're looking for work. Hopefully you'll be able to sign off soon.

Are you looking at any jobs or jobs similar to your previous job? If similar then you need to widen your search.

Be sure to check your CV is up to date and well written. Same with your cover letter. Tailor them for each job you apply for.

As for getting money now, you say you're selling belongings. How? Have you considered other ways of selling them? For example, if you're just using ebay try Gumtree and facebook. No fees and possibly a quicker sale, plus sold as seen (no returns). Either way, you can get cash in hand.

Do be careful though. It's easy to just be thinking about the money and fall for a scam. Cash only on collection. Double check the notes. Don't post items, especially not to other countries. If it seems to good to be true it probably is.

Even little things can add up and even if you think it has no/very little value you might be surprised.

For the car, is it possible to change it for a car that's cheaper to buy and cheaper to run? Like if you have a big car you could get a smaller car. Obviously depends on what car you already have.

Other ways of making money won't be quick and it won't be a lot. However, look through this board for some ideas. You have things like surveys, writing reviews, blogging, cashback when you shop and so on.

Also, look at ways to cut down on spending. Use vouchers and discount codes. Look and see if you're spending money on things you don't need (e.g. Sky TV or expensive mobile contract). Think about what you're buying and if you need it or just want it. Look out for deals, try cheaper brands, shop around and so on. You might be surprised how much you can save.
  • Its an awful climate for looking for work in but I would strongly advise if you are looking for work, don't just rely on applying for jobs. With so many people being out of work atm every job advertised is getting between 80-600 applicants on average... as you can imaging being one of 600 applicants is going to make your chance of interview remote and employment even harder...

Looking for companies your qualified to work at within a commutable distance and visiting their website send them a spec email tell them your skills job aim and CV. Its a numbers game - if your 1 of 600 applicants chances are low... if your the only spec cv they see and its just as there thinking of employing someone its a 1 out of 1 odds. Plus taking a chance on someone coming direct is cheap than starting a recruiting process of employing an agency...

I emailed 118 companies my cv who met my criteria and I got 2 interviews and 1 job... That a 2% return on interview and 1% job success rate within 2 weeks... Plus emailing companies on spec is totally free...
