Different contracts, expectations/appraisal

Company I work for roughly has 2 sets of employees- those who've been there 10+ years and are on great contracts (pay, pensions etc) and newer employees
years (poorer contracts, pensions).
My concern is that many of the people on great pay and contracts do not take on senior roles and have lower expectations on them than the newer staff. The performance assessment takes into account length of service to their benefit and they are not expected to develop in the same way. HR stated that performance is measured on the expectations of the company on the individiual- i.e they are pay someone more for less- is this legal? The assessment is also used when there are rounds of redundancies- newer staff are therefore more likely to leave (the older staff have huge redundancy payoffs). In the union, but most of the union people are part of the other group so not sure if they would help. Would like some advice on whether I can take action and what I should do.

Can they pay someone more for doing the job they are employed to do on the terms that they were employed to do it? Yes, absolutely they can. If you don't like your terms, then you find another job that gives you the terms you want. Just as those employees did.0

It is amazing how many people fail to understand that, apart from a small number of reasons prohibited by law (e.g. race, gender sexual orientation etc), an employer can quite lawfully discriminate in any way they please!
You can attempt to negotiate but, if that fails, you remaining options are to put up with it or leave.0
