Overpaid holiday pay

Hi....my son finished his employment with kwik fit approx middle of June and flew to NZ on the 28th June , he is doing a lot of travelling up to 2 yrs... I received a couple of letters addressed to him from Kwik Fit, in Aug and I returned to sender unopened. Yesterday he received a letter, which I opened as there was no return address on the envelope . To my shock it's a letter from debt agency acting on behalf of KF wanting immediate payment of approx £370. I would think that this is over payment of holiday pay/wages and obviously my son has no idea of this situation and I don't need the stress of debt collectors coming round...I will phone the debt agency on Monday and explain all this, but any advice on how to deal with this would really be appreciated...will they freeze the payment or will interest be added until they find him? Part of me wants to pay it because it's done and out the way then and I won't have to worry for my son,. What do you think the debt agency and Kwik Fit will do?
Looking forward to some advice.

Why not call your son and have him deal with it?

I would imagine that the time difference won't make things easy although I agree email is a wonderful invention!

If I was in the OP's situation I would contact son and get him to write a letter of authority for the debt collectors to speak to the OP at the same time contacting the debt collectors explaining the situation to buy some time before the letter (or more likely email) of authority can be obtained.

Once that's obtained the OP can query the debt on the son's behalf - after all it could be a mistake and get a breakdown of the debt.

If it's owed then the OP and son can come to some arrangement about the payment of it or if its in dispute then let the debt collectors know why its in dispute.

Obviously the son/OP would need to check that the sum being asked for is either before or after tax/NI

I'm just wondering why you sent the letters back initially as they could have been about anything...eg pension options.

Probably worth getting a letter of authority for the employer too .

(although I suspect the OP knows her son was overpaid as she's not considering any other possibilities)
