  • Fairly sure you cannot claim child benefit for a child that is claiming income support and as child benefit is the trigger for child maintenance, no, you couldn't claim it if your child was eligible for income support.
  • Does your child meet the qualifying criteria for Income Support?

No. If the child is claiming income support then they are classed as independent. You wont be able to continue claiming child benefit meaning you wont be eligible to claim maintenance for them.

a child can only claim income support if they are in full time education and estranged from parents.
how can you claim child support for a child that is no longer living with you?

There was a thread last year of a nrp who had to continue paying maintenance despite his daughter having become a parent herself and claiming all single parent benefits related. I can't remember the rationale behind it but he had argued it to no avail.

I suspect that might be a young single parent who remained part of the PWC's household.

it would be, but if the young person is claiming benefits in her own right, then the PWC would no longer be entitled to benefits for her.
so no child benefit in payment should equal no child maintenance

It would seem that this is not correct. Here's the link to the similar thread.
