Is Pension worthwhile? Help

Is it worthwhile continuing with a Stakeholder Pension? I have just left a company who had me transfer to a stakeholder pension a year ago where they contributed a % to it. Now they are not in the picture, I wonder whether to 'freeze' this. And just set up my own investment portfolio for my later years. I am 43, I am thinking to start my own business. I have no income whilst taking time out to look at this option. So money outflow needs to be essential.
I have not had much faith in putting money aside in my later years, if I survive that long! So my contribution has been minimal and I wonder whether to invest in shares instead. At least I can get my hands on the funds when I need them.
Please help.
