Oyster Card help please!!

Hi all,

Dumb question time so apologies in advance!!!

My husband and son (11 years) are going to London tomorrow and will need an oyster card for the bus (tube not very likely).

As far as I'm aware they will be in zones 1 a 2.

How do Oyster cards work? Can you just buy one anywhere and put a tenner on it and will my son need his own one?? I've googled it and been on TFL and to be honest it's totally confused me.

Thanks in advance for any advice given!!

Use your contactless debit / credit card if it is one off.
  • Yes, there should be an Oyster card machine or speak to the kiosk. Keep the cards & register them online later & you can add credit from home. Or use contactless as mentioned above.

I'm not sure whether you need to have two contactless cards - one for each person (assuming the 11-y-o does not have own contactless card). Can anyone confirm that only one card is necessary to pay for two tickets for the same journey?

Wonder what the pair did today?

No, you need a contactless card for each passenger.

Oyster cards can be bought from the ticket machines.
