VAT bill from sole trading partnership

I was briefly in a sole trading partnership about three years ago and I walked out due to the other partner running up debts and not telling me about them.
The partnership ended and he carried on trading but did not do ANY other vat returns or tax matters. He has gone into hiding and has left the VAT office chasing me for £6700.
They say that they are about to take enforcement action very soon and have sent me a copy of the partnership agreement with my name on it.
I don't think there is much I can do to stop this.
I would like to appeal if possible or anything that will ease the pain of this. The irony is, I never made any money from this and almost had my house repossessed in the process.
I suppose my main concern is my assets of a fifteen year old van which I use for work and my twenty year old car which is worth about £1500 My wifes car is in my name but she uses it for school run and getting to work £2000 tops.
Will VAT enforcement take these from us?
Do they use third party collection agency's? or a sheriff style collection body?
I am really not concerned about ccjs etc, just worried about not being able to function.
Any guidance would be most appreciated.
Thanks Paul

Hi
HMRC can use their own employees called the ‘Collector of Taxes’ who have powers to take control of goods, or they can use certificated bailiffs.
I recommend contacting Business Debtline for specialist advice on dealing with your situation.
