Hi
To my horror, I discovered a Google search of my name and home town revealed my full name address and date of birth ... The holding of a directorship for six months 19years ago appears to be the root cause.
My questions include if this is lawful, as I'd understood you had to pay to reveal company director information (not sure why my dob is relevant) and how do I remove this from the web.
Any constructive help very much appreciated.

If it's out there then removing is probably a fruitless exercise. It will almost certainly show up in historic cached searches, such as the Wayback Machine.

Companies House now has a beta service that lets you see filed documents without paying.

You could make a request to Google (and other search engines) under the "right to be forgotten". I've absolutely no clue if Google would be required to comply with that request, but I can't think of anything else.
