Offered Job 6 weeks ago - still no contract or start date

Hello All!

I wasn't sure which forum category to post this in but thought this would be the most relevant.

Got a bit of a tricky situation at the moment - I am sure it will all work out but it is really starting to become frustrating now...

Basically a recruitment agency sent me in to a large property company for a graduate job interview, and the following day I was pleased to be told from the agency that I had been offered the job. I got this offer in writing via email straight after the phone call.

They told me that because the contract had to go to head office in the US to be signed off, it would normally take no longer than 2 weeks before I would be starting. Now almost 6 weeks have passed and I still have no update. They are telling me because the company recently went through a merger, contracts are being held up at the moment.

Since I was offered the job I have only received 1 phone call from the actual company employing me and all they said was they are trying everything they can but there hands are tied at the moment.

After just speaking with the agency, she is saying " there is definitely a job there for you, but if you were to start looking elsewhere I would understand". That has left me fuming as it all smells really fishy. Both the agency and company are reputable organisations but I really don't like this.

Before I was offered the job I had already been offered another job, which I turned down in favor of the company in question. I have also turned down several new opportunities (interviews ect.) for other company's as I have committed myself to this company.

Anyway, as I say I am sure everything will be fine, but what if suddenly after 2 months they say something along the lines of "I'm really sorry but the position is no longer available?". I have read that there may be a law in relation to "making a promise" and that if that does happen (or the time lapse becomes even MORE ridiculous) I have la huge loss of earnings as I turned down the other offer for this company.

Please absolutely any advice would be amazing right now. Sorry for the long post but I thought I should display all the facts! :)

Charlie

You have no start date, there is no loss of earnings because nothing has (yet) been finalised. As with any job offer you should continue job seeking until everything is set in stone - and even at that stage you have few rights.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sure it wouldn't come to that anyway but it's so frustrating. The company went through a merger recently and it only went through on September 2nd so that is apparently what the bloody hold up is.

I am told that they are going to try to get me in as a temp until the contract comes though but again why does it have to take so long!!!

Sorry about the rant... I find it helps at times :o
