House Deeds

Hi, need some advice folks and hoping someone here can help.

I purchased a property almost 10 years ago through a Solicitor. Deal passed cleanly and I settled up with Solicitor promptly once I got my bill.

The Solicitor however has held on to my Deeds for "Safekeeping" (which I think is normal practice)?

Anyway, as the years have unfolded, due to a fairly major let down on another legal matter, I no longer want to do business with this particular Solicitor, if I sell my property through a different Solicitor, can (will) my original Solicitor charge me for storage of the Deeds? Or are these held as a matter of courtesy throughout the business?

I really don't want to give them any money at all if it can be avoided.

Many thanks in advance.

in my case I instructed my new solicitor to retrieve them from my former sol. after 5 years

    There was no charge!

  • Cheers ballyblack, thanks for that. Be interested in knowing if that's a trade policy though or just a one off gesture you got. Wouldn't want to give this lot the pleasure ...
