good and bad cholesterol?

How would you go about lowering your 'bad' cholesterol?

A friend, who I mentioned in a thread earlier this year, has been told by his doctor that his bad cholesterol is higher than his good cholesterol and he needs to get the bad cholesterol down.

I've got a few books on nutrition, including some information on cholesterol, but I can't see anything specifically on getting the bad cholesterol down.

He doesn't eat that much food containing cholesterol, so he's surprised at the reading, which I think he said is around 5

    5 and lower is good.

You don't get cholesterol from food, its the type of food you eat. Fatty, sugary. But high cholesterol can run in families, it does in mine. You can buy foods which are suppose to lower cholesterol, but if you eat healthy thinks like butter and fried foods are not good, but spreads and olive oil are good fats.

Not eating much does not mean you won't have high cholesterol.

I just meant that he is vegetarian, so he doesn't eat the lardy and meaty foods that contain high cholesterol.

  • You exercise more, cut back on saturated fats and lose weight if needed. Mine has dropped to 4.3 so far from 5.8 or 5.9 but it's a work in progress. BHF website has info x

Vegetarian choices can be very high in fat, as a matter of fact, I have been shocked at seeing how much so in restaurant that dare putting the information on their menu.

it's quite simple, get rid of fat, reduce drinking, exercise more and it will go down.
