Does the OP sound like someone you would like to work with - completely inflexible and tries to get you sacked because he doesn't like the way you work? Sounds like a joy!
Certainly prefer to work with / for him than some of the people posting on this site.:D
Do you have any opportunity for team meetings? My inclination would be to have one and gently remind your team that they work for you and you really aren't interested in what other teams, or team leaders, do.
I'm not suggesting wording it that way, but you should get my drift.0 -
No idea how people are coming to the conculsion that this guy is unflexible and a total grass.
I hate it when companies give people positions but no authority over the people they are supervising. Its a fake position imo.
If I was given a position over other people, one of the first things I'd ask is what powers do I have in terms of dealing with people who are not doing as hey should. If those under you know your position is just a title, they will play on it (some will anyway)
OP your place seems very working class 9 till 5 corperate slavery type of gig (no offence to anybody who finds offence), so look for somethig else while you are there. Then at least you have a light at the end of the tunnel.0 -

I know what you're saying but on the other hand I need their help and sometimes they know something I don't because I'm only few months there. And also I want work as a team not as a boss who don't care about atmosphere and has no consideration of others. I understands that it's important to have happy employees.
I give you an example. I'm asking one of Mr X good mates (who is working in my department) if we are doing this or that with this or that product( we make quite few things and sometimes I see some stuff first time in my ). And I know he has done it plenty of times but he just says "I wouldn't know" because he knows that in theory (well in their ) I should know everything. But I think you agree with me that workers are getting paid for what they doing and they are expected to have knowledge of what they are doing. I'm to supervise and improve but can't possibly know that place as good as someone doing this 20 years...?
So if I try to be real strict and show my power they just gonna ask me obvious questions until they find something I don't know and they'll just say " well, you are the supervisor you tell me".
So I try to rather build a team than have 6 people asking me everything (which they already know) just to mess with me. I hope I ldo make sense...?0 -
If they feel they are there just to work, 9-5, and don't care is there anyway to change that? I mean, they may be joining in with him because they know they can, but also because they need a break from work they have no interest in.
It's good stating what you expect, improving things and being professional, but maybe you could do something they'd enjoy too. For example, if you have team meetings and they're usually just sitting around and you speaking at them maybe give them chocolates and do a fun team exercise/game. Or have a break during the day, maybe once a week, and do that. Nothing too serious, just something where you can have a bit of a laugh as a team while bonding and improving skills (i.e. teamwork, communication) before getting on with work. After all, you want everyone to work together as a team and get on.
Let them know that although you are serious about the work being done and all that you are willing to have a laugh and relax a little sometimes.
The other guy is coming in and he's being one of the guys. Perhaps you need to do the same, at least to a certain point. Make them want to work for you rather than feeling they have to work for you.0 -
Don't get me wrong. We joke around, have a bit of laugh but when Mr X is around and starting doing me a bad press, then I can be as nice as possible but they will just overlook me and go to him or just ignore me.No jokes or talking to me when he's around. They just pick a side. Childish but what can I do. And one more fact,I never undermined or spoke badly about him to employees or another supervisors.0

I'm not a Nazi,I am quite easy going but he i s just taking a pis..! and they join him. So no matter how "relaxed" I'll make them work,I always gonna be too strict comparing to him.0 -
Is there anyway you can stop him coming to the workshop altogether? Or perhaps take him off to one side to ask him/talk to him about something so he's not talking with them.0

Sometimes I "have" his team on my side so he kinda hanging around. Two captains on one ship. I just think that it's not gonna work for me. No matter how hard I try he treats me like sh... Doesn't matter how much I try to be a team, I consult with him to make sure he is happy with what we gonna do. Never had that coming from him. He just do what he wants and think is right.0
