My dentist insists that oral health (like every other aspect of health) is often determined by genetics - however much you clean your teeth

95% of all dental treatment is entirely preventable. Yes some factors may make someone more susceptible but controlling diet , smoking , cleaning etc will mean for most people they will never need dental treatment. . https://www.nice.org.uk/news/press-and-media/more-children-should-brush-their-teeth-to-halt-tooth-decay-and-gum-disease

Completely false! The "points collecting system" is called UDA's and the dentist gets 1 UDA for 1 Examination, 3 UDA's for any amount of fillings/extractions and 12 UDA's for dentures or crowns! That's for England
Then maybe I misunderstood the nurse who told me about it, sorry.

I've experienced this myself. Up to an age of 15 I used to brush my teeth in the evening, then right after that have sweets before sleep. When I bought my first laptop, I started to research the reasons for bad teeth and that led me to an improved hygiene which helped a lot. I am sometimes upset with my parents for letting me neglect my teeth... They both got dentures in their late thirties, and everyone assumed that I simply inherited weak teeth from them. I now think I inherited their bad habits...

There is , apart from a few very rare conditions , no such thing as weak teeth. You are quite right what most people inherit is bad habits and a change in those will mean better oral health.

best thing to do is what you would do with say your car going wrong and getting a suspicious quote - go somewhere else and get a second opinion! The price for that number of fillings sounds like a complete bargain to those of us that can't get an NHS dentist so i wouldn't be unhappy about the quote, but best to check whether the work actually needs doing...
    Mortgage free!
    Debt free!

And now I am retired - all the time in the world!!
  • £51 for 6 fillings is very cheap. i paid nearly £19 for one and that was with an NHS dentist.
  • Presumably you are in Northern Ireland, which together with Scotland still operates a fee per item service for NHS dentistry, whereas in England and Wales you pay one of three bands of charges.
