Iron dumped in cooking oil..

Don't ask how it happened, but someone put my iron in a dish containing cooking oil. The cable was wound round the storage area at the base so has absorbed it very nicely as it stood upright in it over-night before I found it.
Much as I know it means I'll most likely have to get a new one because of the safety aspect, it goes against my money-saving grain to dispose of it without asking if anyone has any ideas on how to clean it safely please?

Sorry bluedog, but it probably is salvegable if the oil has got into the electrics, if it is just the plug, you could change it.
I'm just glad to hear this sort of thing happens to other people & not just me.

Hi Bluedog,
If it was only the braided cable that was soaked, you can buy it from most hardware stores. I often change mine when it becomes badly kinked. A little spray of WD40 on the base-stand of the iron and wiped off with a cotton cloth won't do any harm either. Do check that the iron is working ok before using it though!0
