been debating whether to move to a big city like London, but will it be hard?

hey guys. i recently broke up with my girlfriend after over a year together and i am starting to re-evaluate everything in my life at the moment. i came to the realisation that i am just not happy with the current situation i ma in and want to change it. i think my own insecurities and unhappiness was a cause of my relationship going downhill.

currently i am working in a low paid job and it's not satisfying. in fact i am really fed up with it and want to work towards something better. i also think it's time i moved away from this place and started a new life elsewhere.

the one problem with all this though, is that i currently don't have the appropriate qualifications to work for a big company, so making good money isn't going to happen right now. i was just thinking whether moving to london or any other big city would be possible with my lack qualifications?

has anyone on this forum made the move to a big city with little to no discernible qualifications and managed to secure themselves a well paid job within a good company?

Can you afford to live in London?

You've been asking similar questions for a long time now, what have you done to move things forward in the meantime?

Most people who move to London for work, usually have a job to goto first. Its not really a good idea to move to an expensive part of the country and hope you can get a job once there. You may not find a job at all, or you many only find jobs similar to what you are doing now, but with the increased living costs you will end up even worse off.

Its also very rare for someone with no qualifications or experience to go straight into a well paid job, most people have to work their way up first.
  • fair comments. to be honest i haven't really thought logically about it and it is more of a rash decision. does anyone know what jobs are in demand in london? i need to qualify myself for in demand jobs.

I'm from London, born & bred here.

Anything in the trade (gas engineer, handy man, plumber) is always in demand & hard to find a good one quickly.

My friend moved to London from the midlands 4 years ago. She is highly qualified & really struggles with the expenses of living in London. In the 4 years she's been here, she's had 3 different house moves (all shared accommodation as she can't afford to rent by herself) and has just started her 3rd job. She is currently viewing shared houses to move again.

She feels very lonely in London despite it being a very populous city, as the mentality & culture in London is a bit (in her words) 'uncaring' and 'soul-less'. What she means is that everyone is out for themselves, when someone looks in need of help a lot of people just walk by, people will push & shove their way into bus/train regardless who was at the stop/station first and people don't talk to each other. Apparently where she's from its common to make conversations with other strangers on trains etc.

She has worked abroad in a foreign country before but finds London the most isolating. The only thing that brought and keeping her here is the job opportunities. Where she's from there isn't much especially as she doesn't drive either.

If you're willing to flat share & struggle with money you'll be fine. If not, you should look into moving somewhere else.
