Holiday insurance claim - want details of credit card/house insurance etc

Options
Claiming for headphones lost on holidays.

A few questions on there such as do you have other insurance? They want to know what credit card, if any, you used and a copy of your home insurance.

I guess they want to know if you're covered elsewhere. How does this work? I do have personal possession cover on my house insurance but, to be honest, headphones were £100, excess is £50 so its hardly worth it.

But, I guess travel insurance people arent going to let me claim on their policy and not the house one. How does this all work?
Surely its not going to be an argument between insurers - you sort the claim no you do it?

Just comply with their requests and answer the questions and supply the details requested (otherwise they won't pay out)

As you are dual insured they will sort it out with your insurer, and you won't have to get involved.

But will it mean a claim on my home insurance?

Like I said, headphones £100, excess £50 so all that I'm going to get is £50.

If they decide to split it and offer me £25 from each insurer I'd rather not have a claim on my house insurance.

They will approach you home insurer behind the scenes you should have to do anything other than supply their details for what is called a contribution claim whereby they each give a percentage this shouldn't then affect your home insurance as they have settled it between them but you will only get the payment from the travel co

Happens nearly all the time on travel where you also hold home insurance

Your home insurance excess won't come into it.

You will only pay the travel insurance excess.
  • But ultimately will I get a claim on my house insurance?

It's unlikely anyway - travel insurers and home insurers generally work under the framework of an agreement that they won't ask for contribution from each other for any claim of less than £150.

Should they for some reason request contribution (and the home insurer pay) then they will log a claim between each other but it will be a travel contribution - it doesn't affect NCD - in all insurers I've worked in, this has been interpreted to mean it isn't used as part of the premium calculations.

You can safely answer any question relating to "have you made any claims on home insurance" as no because you haven't - the travel insurers have - you won't even hear from the home insurers, it's completely behind the scenes.

Relevant ABI agreement here ABI Personal Effects Insurance Contribution Agreement

Only if you make the claim (off your house insurance). You are worrying unnecessarily.

Jeez Paul, you don't have much luck with headphones :(

  • Reading between the lines I think they will be checking the insurance database for insurance claims - worrying about whether it is a travel claim or a home insurance is going to be the least of his problems.
