Unknown Capquest Payments

My other half has been checking through her finances and found 2 payments a month to Capquest Investment. There appears to be no reference numbers attached to the payments.

Unfortunately she seems to have no recollection of what these payments are for, nor does she have any paperwork relating to them. There is a possibility that they may even be connected to a previous address still rather than her current.

What is the best course of action to get information about the accounts, without giving too much away? I know generally the advice is to write to them, however without any information on the accounts (i.e. any account numbers or reference numbers, or even the address) not sure how best to proceed.

    Hi hd216

My first step would be to check my credit report - are there any unusual entries on there she doesn't recognise which may perhaps tally with whatever payments Capquest are taking? If not, there are certain debts companies like Capquest take on which won't necessarily appear on credit files - old student loans, benefit overpayments etc.

If the above doesn't shed any light, she may need to make a Subject Access Request to demand any data Capquest holds relating to her. This would mean disclosing her current address, but as they're already taking payments as it is I don't know that this puts her in any worse a position.

In the meantime, she could of course contact her bank to ask that these regular payments be cancelled, if she is unsure whether they are legit.

    Thanks for the reply Dennis,

I've got her recent reports on Noddle and Clear Score and neither show any signs of any outstanding debts (other than a disputed default with Scottish Power which at present hasn't had a payment made against it in around 5 years). Must admit we haven't had a look at Experian yet and this is on the to do list.

She knows she previously had several credit card and overdraft debts, however the problem is that she can't remember what where and when for most of these - its a long slow process of trying to match who is managing what debts and who the original creditors were. I don't think it would be anything along the lines of benefits, as far as I'm aware she has never claimed any, and I believe if she did have a student loan then it would have been well after 1998.

What are the implications of cancelling the payments if they are a genuine payment plan? At present both payments are for £10 each, so wondering if its best to leave them in place for the time being and go down the SAR route, rather than cancelling them and then having to request the payments set up again. I'm worried that this might potentially cause her having to pay more per month when they realise that financial circumstances have changed.
