Advice required on security check fir new job?

Hi, looking for advice on one part of a security check for a new job I have been offered?
It is p/t 20 hrs, not involving money and I am disabled.
I passed several tests and interviews and was offered the job and knew about this security check, which, I was informed, was to ensure I had no CCJ's, bankruptcy hearings, police records, etc so quite happy to allow as I have none.
Have passed previous CRB checks, and enhanced ones for voluntary work with children/ young adults so knew there would be no problems with that side as well.
This company involved in the checks have now said they will not accept the P60's and letters from the DWP stating the benefit I have been in receipt of, and are demanding that I forward 2 complete years bank statements to them?
I have previously had my card cloned, and I do not see why I have to send my personal and private bank details to a company I know nothing about, for them to say I am OK to do clerical work for 20 hours? What relevance is the details of my monthly outgoings to Tesco, Asda Superdrug of any relevance to my ability to work?
I thought P60's proved what you earned over the year? That alongside the DWP benefit evidence should be enough, surely?
I had a call saying that if I wont provide them, I will have to withdraw from the process, but I have said that I will allow the owner to see the statements, but I am not sending copies to some random company I know nothing about?
I really wanted to get back to work and I thought it would help with my disability?
The owner said that the woman chosen during the last interview period, also withdrew because of this?
Is this normal now to be asked to show two years bank statements, simply to get a job?

What is the name of the checking service, have you verified they are legitimate?

They may be legit, I just don't see why my personal bank statements have to be viewed? I don't ask the employer-to-be, to see his, in case he does not pay me, or spends lavishly risking the company? Do our MP'S have to provide 2 years to prove they are fit to serve?

The details of your "monthly outgoings to Tesco, Asda, Superdrug" may not be of any relevance to your ability to work, however, any outgoings to gambling websites or payday loan companies could well be an indicator of somebody who's in financial difficulties and poses a far higher risk of defrauding the company or being coerced into divulging privileged information etc.

I wouldn't be too happy about providing the sort of information you've been asked for, but would at least ask them to provide a rationale as to why they needed it, and ask what information they would be happy for me to obscure before they got their mitts on it.
