Resigning from my job tomorrow

Hi All,

I work for a lovely company who have treated me very well for the two years I've worked there. My skill set has flourished and they've given me very generous pay rises to reflect the hard work I've put in. I get on well with everyone and it is a nice place to work.

Recently, after being head hunted, I've been offered a new job by a larger company. There is more scope for development and progression, and they've also increased my pay considerably. I will also be working from home which means that I can relocate closer to family.

I am feeling very apprehensive about handing in my notice tomorrow. I play a large role within the organisation (<30 employees) and my departure will leave a big void. To make matters worse, I'm in the middle of a large project and am the only person in the company with the skills to do it.

I feel guilty for leaving, and just hope that they will be amicable. I will be placing great emphasis on how much I've enjoyed working there and cite my desire to relocate as being the main reason I want to leave.

Any suggestions on how to keep things amicable would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I bet the person you replaced thought that... they found you OK.

Plenty of people out there with lots of skill sets - all looking for a job.

    Just enjoy your new one.

Hopefully you've thought about how you can hand over the project to someone else, will you have time to share the relevant skills in your notice period? It sounds like they've invested in you, so I'd be doing my best to repay that (skills wise, not financially!) before you go.

Yes, this is of paramount concern to me. Thankfully I've got the project to a stage where it will be possible to hand it over to more junior members of the team.

I will endeavour to transfer as much knowledge as possible, although a lot of mine has been accrued by spending 2-3 hours a night studying for the past two years.

On the flip side of the coin, I have been dedicated to my job, spent a lot of time and money outside of work on improving my skills, and worked lots of extra hours. Hopefully they will remember this too.
  • If you are as good as you say you are then they will be mad but happy but upset but glad for you.
