Who do we need to talk to to get into the best position financially to have a mortgag

hello, I am 28 working part time, in the last year of my degree, hoping to be qualified as a teacher in 3 years. My husband is 33, works as a bricklayer last year earnt 34K but had a flat remortgaged 7 years ago.
He also owes somewhere in the range of 35k to nemo finance and 5k from the selling of his flat.
His wages last year has meant we have been able to save a few thousand for (eventually) a mortgage. My dad has said he will give us 10k towards it when the time comes.
What steps do we need to be taking now to make sure we are in a situation financially to be accepted for a mortgage?
Is bankruptcy the only way forward?
Will citizens advice be able to help or a financial advisor?
We don't know who to talk to or what to do for the best.
Please help us achieve our goal of one day owning our own house.
many thanks for your help and advice in advance.

Your husband needs to start paying as much off his debts as possible and then start saving for a deposit.
Why is he considering bankrupty? If he can afford to save 'a few thousand' then he can afford to be paying his debts so I'm not sure why this is being considered and it will be even harder to get a mortgage with a bankruptcy on his credit files.
