Can you default on a default?

Hi,
I was paying off a debt to vanquis bank which they had registered as a default, however they sold on my debt to another company at a time I moved house. Therefore ther were a couple of months where I didn't make a payment as I tried to find out who I actually needed to pay. I found out who it was and paid off the debt.
Nearly 2 years later a default has gone on my account by the company I paid the debt off to stating the date I started paying them as the default. Is this allowed? To me the original date I defaulted should remain the default date but I'm no expert.
Thanks in advance.

The original default date should still stand, you should dispute it with the credit reference agency's, and also the creditor, send a letter, mark it "complaint", if not resolved, take to FOS !!!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Can add more recent Ds in the history as they are not new defaults.
Can also add a new default but must be the same default date as the original companies and be clear that its a new entry for an existing debt and not a separate account. As SC says complain saying they are breaching DPA by adding a more recent default which is inaccurate.Still rolling rolling rolling......<
