Hiya, this is a post on behalf of my husband. He is a qualified Joiner and is currently in the Forces. He has recently dont PTLLS(preparing to teach in life long learning sector) and his looking at a route into college to instruct and progress to a Lecturer. We know he will need to work on CTTLS and DTLLS when he gets the hours in teaching. He will be doing an NVQ Assessors course also.
Firstly can anybody offer any advice on the above career? Anything that may help him get into college or even things to avoid.
That was a brief insight to the title of this thread. Obviously when he applies or is interviewed for potential positions he want the following on his CV.
For example,
NVQ Level 3 Caroenter and Joiner (time served)
PTLLS
NVQ Assessor (working on)
English and Maths(Lets say a good and current level)
IT (some sort of recognised qualification to prove he can do Powerpoint presentations etc)
His Military Service.
Ok you can see what were getting at. He wants to brush up his Maths and English.
Is there any websites that can provide training online for free? I know years ago there was 'Bitesize' or simething along those lines.
Also you may have seen IT. Can anyone recommend a basic IT package where he will have a decent understanding?
Plan B is to join the Police, so again he wants to beush up on his Maths and English for application purposes.
Any advice will be greatfully recieve:j
Thanks

Just get a good book off amazon
Better if you are doing it using pen paper, rather than on the computer.0 -
What level has he achieved in English and Maths at present?0

There are no free online courses for English/Maths, they are free at many local colleges or via Learn Direct centres though.
LD also offer IT courses which, whilst not free, are not too expensive, see their "shop" here: http://www.learndirect.com/store/0 -
Play darts and take up cricket scoring for maths. Read some novels for English.
I failed both subjects at school and now work in a job requiring creative writing and good with figures and thats how i learnet (or should that be learned?).0 -
Can't help with the online courses. Apart from mentioning that corbettmaths would be a good free intro; has youtube vieos, printable worksheets, etc. You'd still need to find a college or somewhere to sit the exams though.cherry_three wrote: »Hiya, this is a post on behalf of my husband. Can say a bit about the jobs.
Being a college lecturer is hard work (I joined the sector 30 years ago). The hours are long and can include evenings. You'll envy teachers and HE lecturers pay scales. The pension is all right but you'll get it in your 60s.
I've mates in the police who're retiring in their 50s on good money. Their job was also hard work and involved much more antisocial hours. It's both interesting and, they assure me, infinitely boring. Has he learned any foreign languages? That'd be an asset.
I know somebody who retired from the police on a good pension and who teaches in an FE college for beer money. I'd expect that the police would be a very good direction to go, but in different parts of the UK the sectors may be expanding or contracting. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Wow tha ks for all your replies!
He has a current key skills level of 2 in both Maths & English. It's more of a confidence thing as he is not daft kust been out of school to long.
Just wants to get things ironed out such as 'your' & 'you're' ...a daft example he ha sjust given me. Again its only to brush up on and if so somewhere he can dind the answers to know where he has gone wrong.
Zagubov, thankyou. He just said he likes the idea of it and could find FE rewarding. Tha ks for your feedback, maybe he will try Police first ☺0
