Under EU rules you have the option to remove your private data from Google Search Engine (I will do the same with Yahoo/Bing Soon!)

Due to a recent stalking episode recently which I've contacted police about, by putting my name/town into Google puts me at serious risk due to my bankruptcy details showing i.e address, name, and job title.

I've uploaded proof of ID and other information and followed this link:

Simply type your name into Google and towns you've ever lived at, copy and paste every website/webpage you appear including phone directories. I've found 8 pages that I appear under and put everyone on my application.

https://support.google.com/legal/answer/3110420?rd=1

Then go to submit legal request - Once done you will receive email confirmation.

Within 5 working days the data has now been removed, although it still exists on the website but removed from Google.

You will need to give a good reason (Just a sentence or two), provide ID by uploading passport or driving licence, date and sign. Some reasons I've known is people who feel their job is now at risk, issues with ex's, immigration status, landlord issues, or potential bullying from neighbours or local community.

Good Luck.

You would be better off putting nice things on the internet that show ahead of anything which is nasty then they would have to dig a bit deeper to find it. Luckily for me my names are common enough so I can't be personally identified.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • With bankruptcy, this is a bit of a waste of time as if anyone wants to know if anyone else in the UK has ever been bankrupt they would go straight to the London Gazette (aka Gazettes Online).

And of course the deletion only applies to Google - there are plenty of other search engines that could be used, many of whom are outside the EU so not subject to EU rules.

Finally there is the well-known "Streisand effect" !
  • Hmmmm I'm not sure if it's a waste of time? Agreed that someone specifically checking whether you are BR or not will find out, but one of the things that worries me about declaring BR is a future employer 'googling' me generally and my BR popping up on the first page of results.

If a future employer is concerned about bankruptcy (for example if it is a bank), they can and will check both the credit reference agencies and the London Gazette.

I agree though that these days, ones social media activities are much more of an issue in the vast majority of cases.
  • Hi jason909,

Just to double check, did you choose the following options from the removal page:

    - I would like to remove my personal information from Google's search results, and
    - I would like to request that certain content about me that appears in Google's search results in breach of European privacy law be removed

    Thanks :)

This will probably be good to stop nosey neighbors who just decide to type in someones name to see what they can find. I thinks about as good as it gets if someone who has a real interest in finding out information about you can just use another search engine and go directly to the websites as other people have suggested. There are so many search engines available that it would be impossible to remove it from every one!
  • Hi yes thats correct.

however I'm hearing mixed reports some seem to be getting details knocked off from the search engine and others Google are refusing. It's all hit and miss quite frankly all depends if you're unlucky enough to get a jobsworth at Google.
