collective switch or e on fixed for over 60's

Hi

I'm currently on the e on E.ON MSE Fixed 1 Year Collective Switch
End date : 05/12/2015
Exit fee : £5.00 I'm duel fuel.
My husband has just turned 60, will I be better off signing up to e ons 2 year fixed for those over 60 or do I go for a collective switch again?
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks

  • I have compared the two myself and i've chosen the new collective switch. It's much cheaper than the AGE UK tariffs and you can change tariffs within EON with no exit fees, at the moment.
Fred - Where's your get up and go?

Barney - It just got up and went.

  • Hi gaill and welcome to the Forums.

As your husband has turned 60, he'll definitely be eligible for our AgeUK product. This is a longer fix than your current tariff as it's over 2 years. There's no exit fees but other things like Price Alerts and Rewards are available.

I'd do as fredandwilma have and take a look at a comparison site. Pop in your usage in kWh as this will give a better picture.

Now there's someone at the property over 60, make sure you're on our Priority Services Register. This is a record of any vulnerability at the property and lets us give a service better suited to individual needs. Also, check if you're eligible for Warm Home Discount (worth £140) and the Energy Company Obligation (help with energy saving stuff like loft and cavity wall insulation).

Hope this helps gaill and that hubby had a good birthday when he reached the big six O.

Do the comparison - for me the age uk tariff is at a 31% premium to the collective switch - just under £400 pa more !

I think I might as well throw in the towel and ship myself off to Switzerland then
  • Personally, i think you have to be careful with the AGE UK tariffs. I think it's easy to assume you're going to get a better deal, but i'm anticipating a fall rather than a rise in prices, so i will still be watching for EON's new tariffs, (now i don't have the price alerts.)

    Could be wrong, of course.

Surely not molerat. I can't believe you're anywhere near the Priority Services Register. :)

... so i will still be watching for EON's new tariffs, (now i don't have the price alerts.)

Although you won't receive Eon's price alerts, as part of the service offered by Cheap Energy Club, we'll alert you if your tariff with Eon can be beaten.

Plus we'll also send you an alert a few weeks before the tariff ends, so that you know you'll shortly be moved onto a more expensive rate.

Spot on f&w. No Price Alerts with the MSE Collective Tariff. As a standalone tariff, there'll be no more versions in the future so best to do as you're doing and keep an eye on our website. Although, as with all our tariffs, we'll write to you near the expiry date to let you know it's coming to an end.

Use a comparison site to find the best deal for you. :)

The question of how long to fix for (especially if at a premium) is always difficult. You may prefer the certainty of knowing the cost of the tariff for a longer period, but for me, a lower price usually wins out (especially at a time when prices are steady with possible further falls to come - certianly no indication of price rises yet)

Do also consider separate suppliers. You can almost certainly beat the Eon collective switch gas price ... and that will be a 12 month fix too.
