Changing Cars in NI

Hi All,

The may seem a little stupid but it's really the first time I've been through this process, I've bought a new to me car and I still have my old one. How do I transfer the tax from my previous car onto my new car?

Secondly what do I need to do to register my new car? I have currently been given the little tear off strip from the log book (code begins with V).

Thanks

Since the tax changes, you cannot transfer tax with a car.
You get a refund on anything outstanding on your old car, automatically (or should), calculated in the govts favour, of course. And you have to tax your new car from scratch, as soon as you get it.

The DVLA Swansea is responsible for registration as well now (so far as I know), and have an online set of forms for it...

The basics are that you have to tell the authorities that you are now the registered keeper of the car you have just bought and secondly you have to tell the authorities that your old car is now off the road ie. make a Statuary Off Road Notification (SORN) - this is very important BTW.

The tear off strip you got with the new-to-you car has instructions about informing the authorities that you are the new registered keeper. Follow those instructions. The registration certificate for your old car has instructions about a SORN.

PS. If you are wanting to sell your old car and not scrap it, you do not need to do SORN as far as I know - at least not until the tax has run out.
  • Also if you decide to sorn it, it needs to actually be off road, ie on private property, otherwise you might well get a fine!
