Advice on Barclays account closure

Hi,
My wife has 2 accounts 1 barclays current (£300 od) and 1 barclaycard (£3,0000. She was made unemployed a few months ago so we wrote to Barclays to say she is unemployed and couldn't meet her repayments at the moment and offered token payments of £1.
They have now said that they are terminating her accounts. So far she's been a really good customer and just needed some time to get a new job before she can pay normally. Can they do this or are they just using scare tactics?

Banks can do as they please, you would possibly of been better off saying nothing.
Anyway, the bank account is easily solvable, just get her to open a new basic account, with a bank she has no debt with.
Anyone can open a basic account, there is no OD, and no credit check, you need to search for them, as they are not advertised.
Just treat the old OD. As just another debt, and keep paying them the £1 a month.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Thanks for the quick reply.
Thought we were doing the right thing by telling them. If she can repay it soon would they reconsider or is that it once they send the letters?0 -
Well you can try, but I doubt it would make much difference.

My partner had 2 Barclays accounts and was in financial difficulty. He started a dmp and was paying £1 token payments, they cancelled the accounts and have been sold on to a debt company. He simply opened a basic account with Barclays Tesco Loan - 91770

Hope your partner realises that Barclays can help themselves to the contents of his/her bank account, whenever they like, using the right of offset ?
That's a dangerous game to play, they could quiet legally clear out the account !!!!!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. What his basic account that he has now? And even if they've sold the debt on?Tesco Loan - 91770

Doesn't happen that often, if the debt has been sold its unlikely, but having debts, and other live accounts, with the same institution, is never recommended.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
