Nervous about my first day at work

I am starting a new job in two weeks, I have to go to a training conference for my first day and I am very nervous about it. I hate standing up in front of people, introducing myself.

Have they said that you have to? I know when I was training to be a teacher one of my tutors said to stand in front of a mirror and say what you would say to see how it is projected, it might help. The other thing is just to talk and pretend it's just a good friend that you are talking to as they want you to succeed and be there so be confident.

    Good luck!

Hi I'm Matt1001 and I really hate introducing myself to a large group like this...

I am sure it would get a lot of agreement, but obviously not if you think it is the sort of job where it might count against you.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,

Remember everyone else will probably feel the same as you do!

Reminds me of a temp an agency sent me, she was happy to make a phone call but had a phobia about answering calls. Nice lass but of zero use to me so she was gone by lunchtime.

So don't blow it with nerves, simply fake confidence, stand up and announce what your told to say. How hard is it to stand up and say my name is Matt, I live in xxxxx and am looking forward to the training and starting work.

VERY easy... for a person who is able to do it. Imagine your own phobia, then imagine a person without your phobia saying.. hey how hard can it be.

He didn't say he has a phobia, he's just nervous. Everyone gets nervous in this sort of situation. You just to have to act instead of being you. We've all been there.

Everyone gets nervous, i get the impression its more than that but thats just my take on it. But you're on to somethign with the 'acting', that is a good way to do it.

If in doubt, just look at the main trainers. Head up, speak clearly, good luck!
breathe in, breathe out- You're alive! Everything else is a bonus, right? RIGHT??
  • My best tip would be to really prepare well for that presentation. Rehearse it well. If you can do a high energy 4 minutes without notes you will stand out as one of their most memorable first-day speakers, simply because most people will probably be reading from notes, be unrehearsed, or be frightened.
    Good Luck!
