Potatoe gleaning

So today one of our farmers harvested his potatoes and this evening we "picked up the leftovers" about 20kg until darkness overcame us. We know they will be ploughed in within the next few days. Would you do the same? Is it theft ? Or being sensible?

Not without permission, doing it without is theft pure and simple. You should have asked0

They will be ploughed in tomorrow or the day after0

I totally disagree with people " helping themselves " before a harvest and believe me I have seen "walkers" march through my village with a stalk of sprouts in their rucsac. My take on it is they are left overs , no longer required and harvest is done0

So you wouldn't mind if the farmer walked into your garden and pick up anything you'd left lying around? If you're so sure it's ok why didn't you just ask them first?0
-
I also think you should have asked first.
I'm not a farmer - but I tend to assume that the ploughing back in of produce like that is something that will help to "nourish" the land and, in taking that food that was going to be ploughed back in, then the land has been "robbed" of the "nourishment" it was about to get from that.0 -
It's not about theft my comment is this is about unused food that could be used productively0

Gawdgiveme patience time again....
Motto for house-hunters = don't buy a house next door to an old person who hasn't Got A Life....as their hobby might well be "creating trouble"0 -
Sorry not great at the replying thing but the ploughing in of produce is a small part of farming the farmers don't rely on this anymore . Much is managed by nitrogen based products0

If you asked first, then you'd know for sure whether the farmer minded or not, wouldn't you? Those potatoes (singular is potato, by the way) do not belong to you. So regardless of what the farmer was planning on doing with them - his potatoes, his choice - you have stolen them.[0

Well to put the cat amongst the pigeons we do have consent to glean but interesting you have such opinions. All of you would prefer to waste unrequired food rather than use it . . The issue is not about theft but about waste0
