Erm...a little embarrassed here
I have a few friends round for dinner and am making a delicious dinner....BUT have forgotten to buy the butter to make the dessert (was only planning to make a sponge cake) and have no marg. What else can I make? Have all basic baking ingredients and any help will be VERY gratefully received!!!

Hi lemonade_money,
If you have some cream, what about meringues or pavlova?
There are some recipes and links for cakes without butter in these older threads that might help:

You could make a butterless sponge....separate your eggs, beat yolks and sugar until creamy and holding a shape when you lift beaters, sift in s.r. flour and then stiff whisk whites and fold in with a cutting movement, using a metal spoon, cook as normal...should rise well but if you are nervous about this sift in half a teaspoon baking powder with flour...good luck

Have you got any vegetable oil? I use this as an alternative all the time and it makes very light sponges.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
