Low Carb High Fat Diet

I am going to embark on a Low Carb High Fat Diet to help me lose weight and get my diabetes under control. I am not a natural dieter, and all this carb counting really confuses me!

Can anyone recommend a book, a website or anything which I could use to learn some basics about what I can and cannot eat!

Is it type 1 or type 2 you have?

To lose weight you just need to cut down on the calories regardless of their source but if you have diabetes then cutting down on the carbs is usually a good idea.

    Thanks for the links! :)

I found it very helpful when I was first diagnosed. I've managed to keep my blood sugars under control through diet only with the advice on that forum.

I use My Fitness Pal to log all the food/drink I've consumed, it breaks each food type into calories/carbs/fat/protein etc. It's really useful for me in terms of losing weight.

  • A slightly different thing but paleo and primal lifestyle may be useful as they both di low carb, high fat as standard. I have found marksdailyapple.com to be a great resource with insightful well referenced articles, forums and recipe ideas etc.

I second the marksdailyapple.com site. Also suggest you research the ketogenic diet - a google search brings up good sites.

    Good luck on your quest!

Try reading Escape the Diet Trap by Dr John Briffa, which is about the benefits of high fat low carb eating. Whilst there aren't receipes in it, there's a whole section about foods to eat and foods to avoid.

+1 for MFP. An excellent free app which lets you keep track of everything you eat and drink, and also lets you log your exercise and adds it into the calorie mix.

I'm not a great fan of calorie counting, but it wasn't until I started using MFP that I realised how much I was tucking away without thinking - the odd biscuit here, a bottle of beer there, which I didn't consider part of my 'diet'. I was consuming way more than I realised. The app helps you keep that kind of thing under control.
