Credit check before employment issue

Hi guys

Ive just been offered a job for one of the UKs leading retail stores however before I can start the company are carrying out in their words a "finance check".

Now here is my concern, I've never had a CCJ but I once was silly when it came to money and I now have a number of debts sat with a debt charity which I'm paying monthly.

Is my financial past going to come back to haunt me? Or will the fact I've never had a CCJ be enough for me to pass the check?

Any feedback would help :) I'm pretty worried about it!

I guess as its retail, you may have access to tills. Take from the link what you will, hope it works out for ya,
  • Its retail but working on the phones in a contact centre. This is the first company I've applied for since having this Debt Management Plan as I've worked at the same company for the last 3 years. At least I still have a job I suppose haha :)
  • You should be fine. Defaults should not be listed on their report - just information that's in the public domain.
  • I've just looked and the company they use to do the checks is called Security Watchdog. Reading up on their website and it states they look for IVAs also which isn't a good sign for me :)

At least I still have my current job though.

As you would be working in a contact centre, it really depends on what the work would entail. If you would be taking payment information over the phone, therefore having access to financial systems, it may have an effect. Companies are naturally keen to minimise risk, and a person who has been unable to manage their own finances may be perceived as a risk in that situation.

An IVA and a DMP (debt management plan) via a debt charity is not the same thing.

An IVA is a formal arrangement, a DMP is an informal arrangement. An IVA is public information and recorded on the insolvency register, there is no such register for a DMP so no information is available in the public domain.
  • I experienced the same years back with a call centre job (retail) I didn't get the job because of past debt issues. It left me disappointed, but at the end of the day they lost someone who would have been a good reliable worker.

I hope it works out for you.
