Need advice - problems with neighbours

One of the neighbours who have a house behind my house are complaining that after our gardener burned some waste in our garden, that smoke/ash went over the fence and landed on their trampoline, resulting in a lot of holes...

They now want me to buy a new cover for the trampoline, which costs over £150 - I've checked the prices myself.

Not sure what to do.. For one I don't know whether it was really out fire that caused the holes, and whether I really should pay up, as they probably will take court action if we don't..

Thanks all.

Have they shown you the cover with the burn holes in it?

Seems a bit far fetched for me, I can't see that stuff that was being burnt could land on their trampoline and still be hot enough to burn it unless it was very close to the fire...

Aask if you can start another fire to see for yourself whether such a thing could cause damage like that.
If it does, then you might want to pay up.

To be honest, ash cools massively when it becomes light enough to become airborn. I find it hard to believe that once over the fence and landed, it would be hot enough to cause any damage.

Thanks all.. Do you think they'd win if they took it to Small Claims?
  • Shouldn't they be contacting your gardener about this? Shouldn't he have liability insurance?
