    I wouldn't say 650b is uncommon any more, it's where a lot of the market has already moved to (much quicker than to 29er's) and the 26in wheel size is rapidly disappearing with very few new bikes using that size - out of the 209 MY2016 bikes listed on Evans, there isn't a single standard 26 bike listed (the 7 26er's listed are all fat bikes). So longterm I think 27.5 is the better choice, there's plenty of tyres out there now and with no new 26er bikes being released the tyre market is going to grow for 27.5.
