Interesting program on ITV tonight about the payday lender, uncle buck.
The documentary followed the collections dept, trying to recoup unpaid accounts, most of these call handlers are 20 something's, on there first jobs, there 1st weapon of choice ? The telephone.
They are all on massive commissions according to how much they can get from the customer.
Old advise still applies here, if your struggling, deal with them in writing only.

yup i saw it. I don't have a problem with credit companies having recovery depts but it did strike me as a soul sucking way to make a living!£1000 Emergency fund No90 £1000/1000
LBM 28/1/15 total debt - [STRIKE]£23,410[/STRIKE] 24/3/16 total debt - £7,298

Must be pretty grim doing that everyday for a living, listening to peoples excuses, sad stories and abuse. Not like they can just say, OK I'm sorry about whats happening to you, just forget about the money. Don't think I could keep my composure every day, 12 hours a day while listening to someone swear their head off and attack me personally for a mess they got themselves into.0

I think it gives a good insight into how collection depts operate, I would assume most follow a similar model, seems the staff are just trying to "earn" there bonus, by recovering as much money as possible.
I particularly liked the caller who finally admitted they never had a job in the first place, kind of brings into question how effective work and affordability checks actually are in this industry !!!!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Yeah but how many people would then quickly shout harassment if these lenders were to contact employers to confirm individual's employment, although I'm all for it I can just picture it, but perhaps that is what it needs as in recent days, viewing posts I can't understand how people can get 3 loans out at the same time in the times of today, so something has gone wrong once again I'd agree
I saw it through as part of me wanted to switch off, it wasn't great - but that is representative of any call centre in general; retentions dept just as vile, if not harder! however we did get mindfulness training to deal with it and talks about having the will I suppose, it does now seem worse a fate worse then collections - we didn't have the nicety of people claiming it wasn't their account
I'd love to have saved it to watch it every time I feel tempted for, I am thinking my little suspicion of these lenders only wanting defaulters rings perhaps ever more truer to devote a whole hour to it just collections. Well done ITV! who could have cleared up the image of someone taking out one of these types of loans amongst a host of other queries, but no. Anyway soberingly good for career guidance if nothing else, probably should wish it had been on sooner for that alone, I know now where I have been going wrong!
Oh well least those in these companies will never themselves need a payday loan not with a basic alone of 20k! of course they can never put themselves in the customer's shoes, god love them.0 -
This is why I am not to be rude/aggressive with people on the telephone unless they are first rude to me. Telesales, debt collectors etc probably really hate their jobs. They're probably only there because they can't find other jobs. It's totally soul sucking. I just politely say no and hang up. I don't waste their time with insults and some 'funny' things that people suggest saying back to them. Poor people.0

Some may hate their jobs; but I remember watching a similar program some years ago, when they would high five each other if they got a debtor to cry during a phone call. So no, I don't feel sorry for them. Another bonus is that these twenty somethings in their first job probably have huge student debt chasing some mickey mouse degree.0
