A 'Lifetime' guarantee on an implant is just silly!
There is no way that it will not come with a load of caveats and conditions that will render it almost meaningless - unless the dentists giving it is recklessly stupid!
The reasons for implant failure are mainly down to how the patient looks after it, and there is no way that a neglectful patient could be given such a free ticket. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Just a quick update on this, I had the implant placed earlier this year, quite uncomfortable to be honest and I wasn't expecting my gum to be cut open and folded back to expose the jawbone! He showed me this in the mirror and the visible threads at the front where there was no bone before he put the bone graft on. Post op it was sore for a week or so with 3 stitches in the gum, but more stressful was my paranoia that the bone graft (which he described as being like flakes of sugar) would "fall off". A few small bits of bone did work their way out but apparently this is normal and the graft took fine. After 3 months I had the healing abutment fitted and then a few weeks ago the final abutment fitted (and some "trimming" of gum and bone) and the impression made for the crown. I get this fitted this week, I can't wear my denture with the final abutment in and the horrible temporary composite (chewing gum) tooth fell off after a few days so I've been keeping my mouth shut for the last week or so!
When I get the crown fitted the process will be finished. It involved 7 appointments (initial visit, initial consultation, implant placement, check up/stitch removal, healing abutment, final abutment, fitting crown) and cost £1350 including the graft. While this is a lot of money I feel it will be worth it, and I have been happy with the level of care. I absolutely hated the denture and hope that if the implant lasts there may be a bit of saving against maintaining the denture but that's secondary to having my "tooth" back.
One of my few upper molars (this and the front tooth are the only teeth I've lost in adult life but I had 10 healthy teeth removed as a child by my orthodontist) had to be taken out 2 years ago after breaking beyond repair and I have asked the dentist about another implant in the future - while I can function without this tooth I am becoming concerned about the long term strain and impact on opposite and adjacent teeth (that's what happens when you look on the internet!). I understand this one would involve ct scans, sinus lifts (or a newer but less invasive procedure he has been looking into) etc and so even more money - so time for me to start saving again.0 -
I am planning to have 2 implants at the Poynton Dental Clinic. Did you use this dentist and can you let me know if you would recommend.0
