ive just started reading this thread from the beginning as this will be our 1st winter in this house and we are feeling the cold already.

Any ideas for a freezing cold bathroom we have a small radiator in there but it doesnt seem to do much for the room, the bath itself is cold to touch and has been all through the summer so we are dreading the winter.

One poster (sorry can't remember who it was) suggested using up an old duvet by stuffing it under and around the sides of the bath - it would mean removing the bath panel to get at the under side of the bath, but sounds like a good idea - like putting a tea cosy around it to keep the bath water warmer for longer.

Someone else (sorry can't remember who that was either) suggested doing the same thing but with loft insulation around the bath, it keeps the bath water hotter for longer.

Thanking this thread for another idea I'm about to implement (after the bubble wrap one). I've just ordered a couple of £1.99 fleece blankets and some velcro to make window covers. I'll probably still hang curtains but the fleece linings will be velcro fastened straight to the PVC along the top of the window for easy removal. I'm amazed at how many simple little things like this don't spring to mind. Thanks guys :)

A bit pricey but you could try having a wall mounted fan heater in there just to use when you need it. They are expensive to run for long periods of time, but about 20 mins or so while you get out of the bath/shower shoudn't run off too much with the bills. Because it's a bathroom it has to be fitted by an electrician, so I'm not so sure it would be good for short term money saving. Chepo solution, wrap yourself in a towel and hot foot it into the warmest room.

We have a wall mounted fan heater. We don't use it often but it is effective for those cold mornings. Normally we just operate it for a minute or two before getting into the shower, the room soon gets warm once the shower is on so we switch it off. It really takes the chill off. If you don't have gas central heating installed this will probably be the cheapest way to heat your bathroom.

If you have gas central heating the best solution may be to get a radiator installed in the bathroom, it probably won't be too expensive if you already have a suitable boiler and radiators in adjoining rooms.

    Re: SPiders..

dont know if this has been said but spiders HATE conkers..... if you pop a small bowl on each windowledge apparently it keeps them out as they cant stand the smell... you can get a conker spray from bettaware of kleeneze i think....

My SIL did it last year and she said its works like a charm, they normally get loads and had hardly any.

this morning was freezing but gorgeous. my road i live in was all hazy and foggy, but u could see the sun trying to come through. bright blue skies and sun now. which is nice but i'm in a need grey and dull weather period.

I popped into town and i saw the most gorgeous dinning table ( we just having a sperate dinning room as always had kitchen diner but had new room built on for lounge so old lounge will become dinning room) anyway it was massive 4.5 foot by 6.5 foot. i stood there i think went into a dream i could just imgaine it in our room, on a freezing cold, wet dark winter day. with fire on, nice meal on table. no idea how long the sales assiastant had been asking if i wanted any help. i had to apologise as i would hate her to think i was being rude. but for me this is what sums winter up. nice snuggle cozy family meals and activites. Won't buy it tho as althoguh very good price with lots of little peeps i'd be paranoid it would get damaged as it a very soft wood.

think i'm an old romantic at heart.

i bought my first snuggle fleece for sofa today. as although the days are warm it gets very cold very quick once the sun starts to go down.

as for spidar, omg we had the bigggest one ever in our new lounge i asked hubby to get it out, after few min's and alot of noise i opened door and said ' has it gone' Reply was, no i'm still chasing the !!!!!!. lol. i prompty shut the door.

i think this weekend if we get chance i'm off to find some conkers, lol.

Well, we are doing better than we did last year and my target is to leave the heating off till 1st of October but i can feel myself waning!

I have been using my candles though and have found they give off a nice little heat too.

I intend to get some fleece blankets and try out the great idea of attaching them to our curtain lining in our lounge which has huge rooms.

I have spoken to my partner about approaching our letting company to see if they can get our landlord to insulate the loft further. It is not likely to cost him that much due to all the grants that are around and it would definitely save us money on our bills.

Went to Ikea again today to get the fleece blankets to line the bedroom curtains. Had another look in the bargain bin, no curtains or throws today (think I was very lucky last time) but I did get some bags of candles.

We are going camping tomorrow so I really hope the weather holds out, think of us shivering in a tent this weekend!
  • very cold last night, woke to a covering of frost!!!!
  • As subject line really. Tonight for the first time in months it will be dark when I get in and I'll have to lock up the chickens etc in the dark - the nights seem to be drawing in so quickly and I realise my torch isn't much good. I've previously had a rechargeable light which didn't hold it's charge, and one of those with lots of little white lights, which didn't throw much light at all.
Someone recommended a bike light for a nice broad strong beam which sounds good. I wondered if anyone has any other recommendations or seen any good offers.

    Thanks
