Preparing for Winter

I have a 4.5 tog duvet and one of those fleecy under-blanket fitted sheets on mine in winter... I manage to get fitted sheets over the top but the duvet doesn't go over the corners/edges... if it did I don't think I could use fitted sheets.
Hi oliveoyl, just catching up on all these messages. Try using a king size fitted sheet if it's a double mattress.
I got a new bed recently and the mattress was ALOT deeper than my old one so I got a king size fitted sheet and it fits great. HTH.;)0 -
on the isle of wight the days seem warmish, but once sun starts going down it is really cold. early mornings are also quite nippy.0

Hi
I have layers and warm bedding etc but my house is old, about 100 yrs and the walls are solid so no chance of cavity insulation. We have the loft done now apart from one small bit (note to nag on this!)but I guess will old walls there is nothing to keep the cold out except heat the inside? The outside wall was freezing this morning.
Also with an old 1930's flat roof kitchen extension, anything there I can do-got double glazing and a radiator but like everyone else, after last years gas bill we could do with leaving it off until November, you would think the south was warm but its a damp cold we have and it gets into my bones0 -
To the poor souls who have spiders moving in (EEEEEEK) - you can buy online a spider deterrant that you plug in. My daughter is getting one. I live right out in the wilds and yet we very rarely ever see a spider in here thanku god.. just one or two at this time of year. The husband hoovers them and I am scared to open the hall cupboard in case they all crawl back down the tube and are waiting for me one day.....0

I used to be worried about the spiders, until I saw a programme about the flies that they actually kill/eat. The dirty habits of those things make me happy to have the spiders trapping them
. We have a big one nicknamed Boris - OH is a Who fan (Boris the Spider)!

you know, I'm so glad you posted that! Glad to know I'm not the only one that's convinced the spiders are going to crawl back out of the dyson (though logically, I can't see how they'd get through the dust that's built up in there because I'm too scared to empty it!)0 -
Southwest Scotland is cold and wet today. No heaters on in our house yet but have just counted up and it's only been 17 weeks since the storage heaters all got switched off! In addition, I think I've had to light the fire about half a dozen times over the past few weeks. Mornings are really nippy, almost as though there's been frost. We do live in a bit of a frost pocket that's often hit by high winds, so the best of our weather in 2009 was from late May to July. Since August, we've had about a week and a half of decent weather in total. Homegrown veggies a bit of a wash out this year again and there's probably little chance of making it to 26 weeks without switching on a heater when we haven't even reached 20 yet.
Liking the fleece curtain lining ideas but I'm in a rented house and have PVC double glazing units, so all my curtains hang from the walls on poles, adding another 10cm gap for heat to escape. It's also impossible to hang anything at the kitchen window as it's large and has the sink etc beneath it. We have no heating in the kitchen (except when cooking), so it's the coldest room in the house, especially first thing in the morning during winter. I like my view, so don't want to do anything extreme, like bubblewrap. Any ideas about how I could dress this window to help preserve any heat? Is there a way of fitting anything to PVC without drilling into it?I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Do you live near me? We have mutant spiders trying to move in... I think we need a nice cold winter to kill them off! In the meantime I've got conker & clove extract to spray round the doors & windows, which seems to be deterring them.
no, i'm on the north east coast of scotland! OH NO mutant spideys are trying to take over the UK :rotfl:0
