I think there is actualyl some truth to the heating helping kids study statement - i passed my exams - GCSEs whilst my parents were still together but my sister had to go and do hers once they had split up, money was tight and it was mum working two jobs to support us both and she hasnt got a single qualification to her name.

Thankfully I am a bit more the studious one with my sister preferrign to go out drinking every weekend so I managed to get my A/S's and my A Levels completed with good grades - although be stuffed if it seems to make a difference with getting a job these days.

Am also slightly concerned as where I live isnt particularly well off and i have a household with two of us working and we still only just manage to make ends meet. so i really do worry about people who are struggling with their pensions etc or who only have one wage. Alot of people here are on benefits too with the excuse - theirs no work - theirs plenty but they are the normal 9 - 5 jobs whereas most here want jobs round the kids. Granted I would love one but at the minute i have an unsociable one where it means I hardly get any time with my bf or family but its bringing in a wage. I'm still looking for another job though that means i could earn a few extra quid. Hoping to apply for one down the road - ok so its four hours a week but its 5 minutes if that form my house, i can get to it easily whatever the weather and its £6 an hour which im not going to sniff at quite frankly:rolleyes: .
    Time to find me again

I can pop into Lakeland shop some time next week and have a look how big the bags are if you want. No sure what day though.

Who was it who mentioned Lakeland moisture crystals ?? I'm wondering how much you get for £4.99, would it just be enough for one windowsill?

They're 2.5k bags... they've got the catalogue on the website. It says on the info for the trap itself that the 500g of crystals that come with it lasts for 3 months.
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

quote=elljay;14704501]Hi, have you any pics? I'd love one of these but can't afford someone in to do the work. How did you do it?

    Liz[/quote]

We measured things up to have good idea as to where the chimney had to be in the living room (it was all closed up) and opened that up. With the help of a handy neighbour I must say.

Then got a proffessional chimeny sweeper in to inspect the chimney to make sure it wasn't damaged or leaking.

The stove I got second hand. Just told a lot of people I wanted one and turned out someone had this one sitting in the loft. So we got it dead cheap.

Bought the pipes new... got lots of advice from different people about what connection pipes to use..
Stuck a heat insulation sheet on the floor.. mounted the whole thing together.. and bob's your uncle. :D

The ceiling has to be smoothed out now and made nice again but that will be done today. (again with the help of a handy neighbour.)

Our budget was really tight so it did take a while to get it done. We just did it in stages.

Don't believe it Ceridwen.....as a pensioner I get £250 a year allowance towards heating, free medicine, free optician help, a third off rail fares, and now free buses.
Plus single person council tax allowance and if really poor would get help with that.
And TIME to grow food and TIME to research moneysaving, TIME to do slow shopping looking for bargains.
Pensioners have never been so well orf. As I said in another post, something seriously wrong with lifestyle if pensioners are freezing to death.

I notice that woolies are selling faux fur throws at half price at the moment.
    http://www.woolworths.co.uk/web/jsp/product/index.jsp?pid=50933827

They are £25 which I know is a lot but we got one 2 years ago (half price as well) and it is the warmest thing ever!!! If it's the same as the one I got (looks the same) it is fleece on one side and faux fur on the other. Ours gets used on the sofa and sometimes gets taken up and put on top of the duvet when we go to bed. It is soooo cosy. I notice thay have other sorts of throws too at half price.

Just thought this might help someone.
:)Do more of what makes you happy:)
