I have no dishwasher, don't need one as there is only me at home. But I do save on washing up by only doing it last thing at night before bedtime I stack the stuff on one draining board and just before bed wash them up.One bowl of water per day.In my shower I have a large empty emulsion bucket that I use for waste water i.e. the water that has to be run before the shower gets hot. My hot tank is in the roof and my shower is on the ground floor so I get around a good 6-10 litres plus before it gets warm enough to shower I use this water in the garden to water the plants and shrubs. Well its better than tipping it down the drain and I am paying for it.

I have always been aware of not wasting water as years ago my late OH worked in the Sudan and he had some dreadful tales of how precious water was, and how we shouldn't just waste it.My old water rates used to be around £36 per month so being on a meter has cut my bill by half

I pay my water bills twice a year, in April and October.

We are a two person household.

I've just looked at my bill for Sept 2014 to March 2015 and it tells me that our average daily water usage is 197 litres,

For March 2014 to Sept 2014 it was 212 litres.

I think it tends to be a little higher in the summer as we water the garden. But this should now reduce a bit, as we've invested in a water butt this year.

We're on a meter, and have saved a lot since it was installed, as we are in a largish house, which had expensive water rates.

  • Hi - 3 people in my household and we have a water meter and the monthly bill is £34. I have an economical dishwasher which gets put on once per day and do 3 washing machines per week. Showers are limited to 4 minutes - we have an egg timer on the windowsill as my bill was £40 per month last year until I introduced this rule.;) HTH

I got a bit of a shock today when I glanced at our water bill which details how much water our household uses daily. Over the last 6 months we've been using 368 litres a day, it says. That sounds like a colossal amount. There are 2 of us living in a 2 bedroom flat.

We pay about £43 per month, currently, for our water.

I'm going to try and get it down, and hopefully see a reduction in our bill, but I was wondering how much water you Old Stylers use?

The first year in our bungalow we paid over £720 per year .
Now on a meter for the last 6 years or more , the bills are £225 per year

Not that much. I use around 80 litres per day and I'm not trying to use as little as possible.

Kicking myself at not having opted for a water meter bill as soon as DS (the last of the kids) left home!

Just been in touch with the water board and it will take a while to go to metering. Shame, as we are away for most of Sept and would have saved a mini fortune. However, having discussed the cost forecast with our water authority, now that it's only the two of us, the savings are going to be substantial anyway, so I have started the ball rolling.

When we have paying students the bills will be higher, but offset by the guests payments, so it's a win win!

If the kids ever decide to return home (it's not unknown these days) we would have to ask them for a contribution.

I will explore ideas on lowering water consumption and keep the cost down.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Over the last 12 months, my total bills have been £130 (per year, to be clear for those with pools/hot tubs etc). I get two bills/year from each of two companies, paying about £65 each six months.

Our bill is £23 a month for the drainage and the supply. We save all shower water and most bath water to flush the loo. I have been known to go and get water in buckets from the water butt outside for flushing too. Laundry is done between 1 and 3 times a week in the machine or in good weather I might do some hand type washing outside in the hand cranked mini washer.
We run the dishwasher when full about 3 times a week.
Usually there are 4 adults here but at the moment there are 3 while DD is doing an internship elsewhere but the usage doesn't change that much because although DD showers more often than anyone else, it is still water that is saved to reuse..

or at a time of your choosing. it's only for a few hours to check for leaks, there's a pansworth of water in there for no2s, and fill a bucket for no1's

tap probably needs a washer costing pennies, easy diy if you turn off the supply

surely you mean the other way round? ;-)

As for original question. I used 129litres on average a day according to my water bill.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
