New employer, Experian

Good afternoon,

I start a new job tomorrow and I'm just reading through the contract and something concerned me.

'Your employment is conditional on the Company receiving satisfactory references for you and on you agreeing to and satisfactorily completing a full background check (through Experian or any other company that the Employer considers appropriate) on the commencement of your employment and at such other point during your employment as it considers reasonably necessary.'

I understand an employer would want employment or personal references which I am fine with, but the concerning part is that they will use Experian.
I do have debt however it should not effect my job, the role is very similar to my previous job and there was no check through Experian.

Can someone clarify if this is like a credit check or just a check to see if I live where I say I live etc

It depends - is your job in the financial industry or accounting in any way?

  • Thank you for the quick reply.

No I work in the food industry, handling money is one of my duties but I it had been for the last 10 years and never needed this.
  • Interesting. I would like to know if I would have this trouble applying for fin/acc jobs where I have no credit rating (never borrowed, house bought with cash 15 years ago). My CRB will be fine but not so sure about the Credit one . Hmmm...

Naa, it is just to check your background, i wouldnt worry about it, its pretty much making sure you ar ewho you say you are.

Remember, we all work because we NEED the money to pay off debts and such, having a debt doesnt go against you. Having CCJ, bankruptcy etc can go against you IF you want to work in finance but im sure that would have been stated.
  • Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it. I can now have a good nights sleep knowing that it's nothing to worry about :)

I don't have any CCJs or anything just a couple of overdrafts and a credit card but I haven't missed any payments on those.

Nothing to worry about then, you're like 90% of the population.
