Wanted - Vacuum cleaner that can deal with long hair without having a hissy fit!

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced vacuum cleaner that can cope with long hair on carpet please? I am currently on some medication that means that my hair is starting to thin and fall out. I thought I would get rid of my old reliable and hair-effective Panasonic upright in favour of a Hoover Velocity cylinder type cleaner (with a pet hair attachment) in order to deal with the problem. This has proved to be a waste of time and money. The pet hair attachment has a rotating brushy thing but is only powered by suction and it stops twiddling after a minute or so and I have to remove the brush and clear the few strands of hair in order to make it start again. Do I need to get another upright? Are the cordless ones any good with long hair? Any advice would be very much appreciated before I make another expensive mistake!
