Doctors charged me for bus pass

Doctors charged me £10 for them to fill out my disabled bus pass form. I was surprised at this, feel its not very fair on people who are getting a benefit.

Do you have a question? They can charge you if it's stuff like forms. But not fit notes, IIRC.

GP's are not required by the NHS to provide letters for bus passes so they can apply a charge to do it privately.
At least it's only a tenner - I had to pay £40 a few years back to get a form signed for work, it's probably more than that now. And once you get the pass you'll soon have recouped the money from the bus journeys you're now getting free.

Do GP charge for printing out patient's history for benefits, if the patient wants them. If so, what is cost?

Varies by GP. I've had to pay to get some notes and others haven't charged.

Varies from GP to GP practice unfortunately, mine charged me £40.00 to get a diagnosis letter for extra time at college for my gcse exams (was 3 years ago when I was 17) to prove I had Aspergers and Dyspraxia and my family were on benefits at the time... (they're carers for my severely autistic brother)

My GP charges £30 for a letter to support a Freedom pass application.

  • I have never had the need or inclination to ask the GP for copies of my medical file or even write a letter/sign a form. Logic dictates that whatever a GP does outside of his normal duties, should be paid for at the going rate based on the time lost to the practice when having to do this signing/reporting. If we were to ask our window cleaner to clean out the gutters as he already has his ladders against the wall do you think that he would do it for nothing?
As for copies of the medical files, I have had reason to telephone the surgery this morning to find out what the cost would be. I was quoted £50 to view them plus an extra 20p for every sheet of paper that has to be copied if I wanted to take copies away with me.
  • I needed to pay £30 for a letter to declare I wasn't suffering any ill health (a real fit-note?!), had I been sick it would have been free! It was 2 lines long and they had spelt my name wrong!
  • All i have ever needed for bus pass was a letter 17 years old stating that i am not allowed to drive, mrs w just had to prove she was on the correct rate of DLA
