When visiting in the republic is it best to
A. Get your Euro in your northern bank before you go.
B. Use a cash machine withdraw cash when needed/or get all the Euro you think you'll need at one go
C. Use a credit card where possible

Kevin

And I suppose the same applies to other Euro countries

Halifax Clarity Credit Card is brilliant and gives hard to beat rates so I tend to use it for all Euro transactions. During recent trip down South, I was getting around £1 = €1.41. I took out cash from my debit card and was charged quite a lot so won't be doing that again. Recently changed sterling into Euro in one of the petrol stations along the border and got a rate of £1= €1.35.

The best way to get euro, although it's not for everyone, is to have a few friends down south who need pounds now and then. You can give each other cash, avoiding all charges.

i use a nationwide select credit card for credit card transactions as fee free and good rates.

For cash use my first trust debit card in AIB cash machines - again no fees (Can also use an Ulsterbank Machine)

Outside of Ireland, i tend to use my NW debit card for cash but the rate and charges aren't great, although i also lift Euro's before leaving Ireland to take with me so minimal usage of card

The BoI debit card should be free to lift Euro's at any Machine in NI and at BoI Machines in the South.

Lifting Euro's from other cash machine costs £1.50 plus 2.75% of the amount withdrawn.

PS - this is assuming you have the clear current account.

The details of rates and charges are available on the internet.

with your credit card - assumig it is the standard mastercard fee is 2.75% on non sterling, non cash transactions
