nhs dentist

Hi,
I just wondered if all NHS dentists were the same in regards to who we see. I have taken my son to see the dentist as his filling has come out. Our dentist was not in so he was seen by another dentist who put a temp filling place and then advised that he would need to come back as soon as possible as the filling will probably fall out or crumble.
The problem is that the with our dentists annual leave and with the time of appointments they have not been able to make an appointment until the 18th of September.
When I said he would be happy to see another dentist they advised to see another Dentist we would need to change our Dentist at the practice. Its this part I am unsure of.
I am no expert and sure they must have a reason but is this the same at all dentists? As like the doctors it would be great if we could call and make appointments in half term regardless of the dentist that we see.
I know we have tried to book check-ups and as the dentist is off we have to arrange them in school time. Where I could do with just seeing if another dentist is available on that day.

Thanks

There probably are dental practices that will do this - but as all dentists have slightly different ways of doing things, it's often best if continuing care is provided by the same dentist.

I hate it if I have to see other dentist's patients - because sometimes the way things have been done is not the way I would do them.

That doesn't mean that one or other of us is 'wrong' - it's just different.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
