Do I have to bring a present?

I've been invited to a birthday party in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I'll be working that evening so if I get there at all it'll be after 10pm: I said I'd try to "pop by" later on.
My question is whether it'd be really awful not to bring a present (it's a joint party so it'd be two presents).
Money is pretty tight for me at the moment, but I don't want to be rude.
If I get them a nice card (each) would that be enough?
Or am I being a complete skunk just thinking about this?
Be honest - any advice welcomed!
TIA

Is skank a banned MSE word or did auto correct get you ?
I'd probably just not bother going if I was going to get there that late or just bring cards and a bottle of something. Depends on what sort of party it is though and whether by 10pm people will be so hammered they won't care or if it is something more formal.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Cards should be ok- maybe some wine, if you're going to dig in to their supply!breathe in, breathe out- You're alive! Everything else is a bonus, right? RIGHT??0

TBH...if you are going to go along, have some food, maybe some drink and enjoy the company of others there...then out of politeness I would go with at least something as a gift...chocolates,wine,or flowers can all be relatively inexpensive.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Not auto correct - I just quite like the word "skunk"!I'd probably just not bother going if I was going to get there that late or just bring cards and a bottle of something. It won't be formal - and I suspect by 10pm everyone'll be more than a little tipsy...0 -

Yes, this is a very sensible approach. My slight worry is that both of the hostesses have more expensive tastes than me - and I don't think they'd appreciate the Aldi cava I have in my cupboard
A cheap present might stand out more than no present0 -

Wouldn't it be easier not to go?0 -

Yes, in some ways it would! But I'm a bit worried that my (relative) poverty is starting to make me isolated - there've been a few events this summer I've declined because of expensive ticket prices etc. It'd be nice to catch up with people.
when you say your friends have expensive tastes what do you mean by that.... and how much do you think you should be paying for a gift?I am still of the opinion that a gift doesnt need to be expensive and with a bit of thought you probably could be quite creative on a small budget.
How about making a birthday cake or a dessert that you could take with you...a plate of chocolate brownies....cupcakes...frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

....but on the flip side of this you dont really want to attend and start to get the reputation for being a bit of a free loader...
Yes, I am worried about that! I'm trying to stop myself from becoming that person...when you say your friends have expensive tastes what do you mean by that.... and how much do you think you should be paying for a gift?I am still of the opinion that a gift doesnt need to be expensive and with a bit of thought you probably could be quite creative on a small budget.
Other guests will probably give real champagne - my budget certainly doesn't stretch to two bottles of that. Also, I don't really know them that well - so choosing something more personal or creative might be tricky. How about making a birthday cake or a dessert that you could take with you...a plate of chocolate brownies....cupcakes...
A lovely idea - thank you!0 -

You could buy a cheap bunch from one of the supermarkets, and then make them into a hand tied more expensive looking bunchWeight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0
