M&S DIY Cake Question

Hi

I'm doing my friend a surprise cake using the M&S iced sponge cakes, I know they're quite shallow and I want to make them look deeper by adding cake drums to each layer and covering with thick ribbon but the sizes aren't standard cake drum sizes, has anybody tried this?

The small cake is 10cm which is around 3.9", the smallest cake drum I can buy is 4", I'm wondering if the different will be really noticable?

And the large is 8.8", but I'd have to buy a 9" cake drum.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Don't think I'd use cake drums for that - I'd probably use polystyrene cake separators sandwiched with thin cake boards.

I think you'd get away with the sizes being slightly off - you could also buy sizes slightly too small then get some fondant icing to bring them up to the size of the cake.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
