Syrup as a sugar substitute?

On impulse bought 3 tins of syrup for a £1 in the market. After much consideration i have started to use it as a sugar substitute in making homemade rice pudding in the slow cooker. I intend to add it to the apples that i am stewing today on the stove.

Is this a good idea and What other uses can i use the syrup for instead of sugar?

I can't see why not. Barbara Cartland wrote a honey cookbook which used honey instead of sugar in all the recipes, I would think syrup (assuming you mean golden syrup and not molasses) is the same.

    I love a spoonful on a bowl of porage.

When I was a child I had it in a sandwich like you might do with honey or in pancakes with banana.

I try to keep sugar in all forms low these days so a spoonful once a week is all I allow myself. Fortunately it keeps well.
  • When my kids were at home I used to make a lovely treacle tart from my old Be-ro book. http://www.be-ro.co.uk/recipe/showrec52.html

  • I use it for making gingerbread and ginger snaps and also for my Christmas cake instead of treacle.

Such a good idea for porridge, I will give it a go tomorrow, thank you for that. :)
