Advice - first time buying with current job before relocating

Hi all
I hope you can help. My husband and I are looking to buy our first home. We currently live and work in the capital but are thinking of relocating to the South West. My husband has had defaults in the past so the mortgage will under my name. My question is, could I apply for a mortgage to buy a property in the SW while I'm still employed in London? We would like to buy before we relocate and are currently living rent free so flexible when to do it but know it'd difficult to get a mortgage on a new job. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
